“The best of soul, blues and classic rock all in a row…Mahal should be a major story in 2018″ – Exclaim!
“Thunderous modern soul” – Okayplayer
“’Snakes’ is a hand-clapping, piano-pounding, call-and-response buildup with a melody that harks back to field hollers.” – New York Times
(New York, NY) Genre defying R&B/Soul goddess Deva Mahal is set to release her much-anticipated debut album Run Deep on March 23 via Motéma Music, fresh off the success of her self-titled introductory EP. Run Deep was produced by Scott Jacoby (Vampire Weekend, José James, Coldplay), with two tracks produced by Jarrett Wetherell (Beyonce/FKA Twigs). The album is available to pre-order now with the track “It’s Down to You” available as an instant grat.
A rare combination of masterful songwriting and breathtaking vocal talent, Deva Mahal (pronounced “Diva”) steps into the spotlight on Run Deep, featuring 12-tracks of pulse-pounding soul with a decidedly modern edge. Taking inspiration from the idea of strength through vulnerability, she powerfully connects with raw honesty, rich musicality, and emotionally searing songs of love and loss that convey the true resiliency of the human spirit to triumph over adversity. Born with blues in her blood, the highly astute songwriter has created a unique sound blending modern R&B, indie-pop, soul, rock and gospel.
“Every experience in life leaves a mark,” says Deva. “Evidence of its existence. Some experiences leave scars, deep grooves inside your very soul that never truly leave you. That is where Run Deep comes from. I never want to wade in the shallow places in life because it’s easier, safer or more comfortable. My music speaks a lot about pain and heartache, but I dive into those feelings, submerge myself in them so I can work through them and get to the other side.”
The title Run Deep connects Deva’s musical bloodline with the finely hewn emotions weaved throughout her songs. The sultry grit of ‘Can’t Call It Love’ kicks off the album, followed by the bold R&B stomp of ‘Snakes,’ a sharp warning to watch out for people with bad intentions. The late-night groove of ‘Turnt Up,’ featuring Allen Stone, sways under the trance of her whiskey-soaked seductiveness, and Stone’s equally sly counterpoint, while the melancholy spirituality of ‘Fire’ traces a clear path through trial, tribulations and facing one’s demons. Despite its title, the track ‘Dream’ is a clear, wide-eyed reflection of a love gone wrong and finding the strength to let go.
The album’s title track ‘Run Deep’ raises the vibration, celebrating the power of music and the triumph of rising above all obstacles, with a stunning feature by Deva’s sister Coco Peila.
Reinforcing her strength and belief in humanity, ‘Optimist’ shines with its organ-driven rock beat. ‘It’s Down to You’ shows off Deva’s soulful balladry as she reclaims her time and energy, while ‘Shards’ intimately reveals her very core in a stark, confessional anthem. ‘Wicked’ is an electro-soul call to action in the vein of Stevie Wonder’s politically charged classics. The album comes full circle with a cover of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin song ‘Take a Giant Step’ – famously covered by her father Taj Mahal in 1969 – but rendered current and personal in Deva’s rendition.
Throughout the album, Deva navigates a wide variation of emotional depth, breathing vivid life into songs that draw on a deep well of personal experience, and serve as revelations, cautionary tales, empowerment anthems, and wry observations on contemporary romance.
The world started to rearealizeva’s songwriting talents in 2008, when ‘Never Let You Go,’ a co-write with her father, gained acclaim on the Grammy-nominated album Maestro. She’s also collaborated with a wide array of artists, including members of TV on the Radio, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and Fat Freddy’s Drop (who she toured with in Europe). She’s also performed at such renowned venues and festivals as Sonar, Womad, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and Montreux Jazz Festival.
Defiant in both voice and in person, Deva has put herself forward as an exemplar of positive body image and overcoming the travails of bullying and discrimination. She’s lent her support and talents to organizations like “Voices of a People’s History of the United States” which are working to cast the light of truth on racial inequality, gender stereotypes, and bias as well as issues surrounding poverty.
Comments Deva: “All the tracks on this album are letters. Letters to myself (both past and present), to people who have meant something meaningful in my life, to the world and the things about it that I find frustrating, and to all of the great loves in my life.”
I wrote this song back in 2005 while living in New Zealand. This was important to me in my life because I have a tendency to fall hard and fast without really considering the consequences. I needed to write a promise to myself to be more protective of what I have to offer and the energy that I put into someone I love. Like a letter to myself.
Snakes
This track also began as an idea for a song that I wrote in 2005 and was revisited in 2015. It evolved into becoming a warning letter to my younger self about the dangers I would inevitably face in the world on my own. It also serves as a reminder to hold onto my light and to be aware of those out there that don’t really have your best interests at heart. Plus, I wanted to write something that I wanted to dance to.
Fire
This song came as a piano piece in my dreams. I later started fleshing it out with producer Andre Harris and then continued to develop it further with the album’s producer, Scott Jacoby. It speaks to a relationship that I was in where I ultimately had to admit to myself that I hadn’t dealt with a previous relationship, and had to make the impossible decision to end things. Sometimes you are no longer light and can drag really beautiful and amazing people down into the darkness that surrounds you. This a letter to a past love. A kind of apology.
Dream
This song came to me one night while living in Brooklyn and I wrote it in one evening on the guitar. I had been deeply in love with the same person for most of my 20’s. This kind of love that lives in your heart and spirit and I had previously been unable to sever the connection. I used to dream of the same child when we were together. In that dream, I was always aware that it was the spirit of the child we would have together. One day, I realized that he had stopped coming to me and that was day that I realized that I could close the door to that chapter of my life. This track is a letter to myself allowing me to move on from something that was extraordinarily painful to me.
Shards
There’s a great quote by Maya Angelou that says “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” I have always had trouble with that. I like to see what makes someone good instead of all the things that tell me I shouldn’t invest myself in that person. After having my heart shattered, I was able to put it back together but the cracks still remained. Every time I fell in love and it didn’t work out, I was carrying the pain of the previous relationship along with the pain of the present. The cracks would never fully heal. For me, each crack had someone’s name on it. I wrote this song working through my heartbreak as a reminder to not try to fix someone or go back to someone when they hurt you. To remember the shards in your heart with their name on it when they wanted to return to your life and make a better decision for your future. A letter to those who have broken my heart.
Run Deep (feat. Coco Peila)
This track is my love letter to music and a reminder that I bend but I won’t break.
Turnt Up (feat. Allen Stone)
This track represents the cynic in me but also gives breath to the sensual person that I am. I believe that women have the right to love their sexuality and not always be the sad victim. That sometimes, we are the hunter.
Superman (Interlude)
This interlude came to me while walking the streets of NYC. Kind of a wish list for the kind of person I want in my life.
Optimist
I wrote this track on guitar when I was feeling particularly overwhelmed from all the pain and injustice that is happening throughout the world. I needed a song that reinforced my strength and belief in humanity. A letter to everyone who feels powerless and has stopped believing in love.
Wicked
I wrote this track for the people who are continually trying to destroy the world and the people who live in it, to tell them that we won’t go quietly into the night. We are powerful and we are many.
It’s Down to You
I wrote this track with Binky Griptite from the Dap Kings and it was about a time in a relationship where I felt I was making all the effort and the other person would do just enough to keep me around. I decided I needed to “reclaim my time” and my power. Teaching myself to create boundaries, which is something that is really quite hard for me to do for myself.
Take A Giant Step
I had the extreme pleasure of meeting one of my idols, the legendary Carole King while waiting on her table in Brooklyn. She was wonderfully gracious, humble and generous to me with her time. I told that I sang her song for my dad for his 70th birthday and we even made a little video together on IG. Will never forget that moment in time. When I decided to record “Take a Giant Step” for my album, I wanted to pay homage to her as well as my father for his 75th birthday – to cover a song I have always loved, written by one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
Project Angel Food held its third annual Garden Party on Sunday March 25, 2018 at an exclusive private residence in the Hollywood Hills where Jennifer Holliday and Sheryl Lee Ralph were reunited on stage more than 30 years after their Broadway debut in the milestone Tony Award winning musical Dreamgirls.
Sheryl Lee Ralph introduced Jennifer Holliday, who performed four songs including “The Way We Were,” “I’m Changing” and the showstopper “And I Am Telling You I’m not Going.”
Jennifer and Sheryl Lee have been longtime supporters of Project Angel Food – in fact Sheryl Lee is a trustee of the organization. Jennifer won the 1982 Tony Award as Best Leading Actress in a Musical and she also won a Grammy for her performance.
The bond between two divas belied the rumors of friction. In fact, Jennifer addressed it on her Instagram profile writing, “Thank you Sheryl Lee @diva3482 for coming to support me at my concert for @projectangelfood in Beverly Hills last night – THANK YOU!” She acknowledged the new star of Claws for being Project Angel Food’s auctioneer for the event and helping raise more than $120,000. Jennifer said, “No words can express what her presence meant to me … While I was performing I could see Sheryl Lee watching me sing from the sidelines just as she used to watch me sing from the wings backstage at the Imperial Theater in New York almost 37 yrs ago… Her smile when I turned to look at her let me know and confirmed to me that our past was now far behind the two of us and that the breakthrough in our friendship is not only real, but it is an unbreakable bond.”
Other celebrities who attended the event included Charlie Carver (“Boys In The Band”), Bruno Tonioli (Dancing With The Stars), Sharon Lawrence (Shameless, Queen Sugar) supermodel Cheryl Tiegs, Christos Garkinos (Dukes of Melrose) Boxer Claude Staten Jr., Lawrence Zarian, The Fashion Guy, Extreme Makeover Home Edition’sMichael Moloney and She’s Gotta Have It star Cleo Anthony.
Several elected officials also attended the party including: LA City Council Members Mitch O’Farrell and David Ryu and West Hollywood City Council Member Lauren Meister.

On Wednesday night LA’s most fashionable crowd turned out for the exclusive Hale Bob runway show at the 10th anniversary Art Hearts Fashion Week LA event. The show kicked off with the celebrity designer’s signature printed designs and models walked to an ethereal beat in the background. The designs were perfect for spring and included vibrant colors and original patterns. The brand Hale Bob is known among celebrities such as Sofia Vergara for their original one of a kind prints and these dresses certainly told a story. Several colorful pieces stuck out to the crowd and had guests snapping photos. The designer spoke about his collection following the show saying, “I believe women can be strong and sexy which is what I wanted to say with this collection” Listen to the full interview below!
The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia kicked off in full swing this Saturday, attracting thousands of visitors and fashionistas to Moscow’s grand Manege building, right next to the historic Red Square.
The week launched with several children’s runway shows, with children’s brand ACOOLA presenting its Street Tropical, Seaview and School collections and the country’s largest children’s department store Detsky Mir showing off its latest seasonal looks, created by the retailer’s designers.
Vyacheslav Zaitsev’s “The Origins-2” show was the collection most visitors of the day came to see. The maître, who celebrated his 80th birthday last week, announced earlier this month that the show was inspired, in his own words, “by his love towards Russia and its national dress”. It felt like it, too – the Fall-Winter 2018-2019 show was a true cornucopia of Russian historical style – from 17th and 18th century aristocratic dresses to coats, traditional Russian sleeveless jackets, camisoles paired with blouses and full multi-layered skirts.
The show also included three-piece suits, shawls traditionally created in Pavlovo Posad, little number dresses and evening gowns which came as a part of a two- or three-item set. A large portion of looks were created in an entirely new technology from Russian lace.
The men’s portion of the collection showcased Indian and Chinese fabrics in collaboration with designer Alexey Mikhaylov – these brought us back to the art of Ballet Rousses, reminding us of Léon Bakst’s iconic and exotic creations. The fashion jewelry and Russian-style felt headpieces, were created specifically for the collection by the talented Lidia Tskhovrebova.
Russian style has always been an inspiration for Slava. With its rich and vivid colors and textures, the traditional Russian style of dress reimagined by Zaitsev even back in the 60’s is still very appealing, balanced and at the same time cozy. At the same time its elements are easily adjustable for everyday life.
Arguably the most famous of all Russian designers, Zaitsev looked radiant when he himself appeared on the runway. He was met with a standing ovation – truly, the most respected of all the Soviet and Post-Soviet Russian couturiers deserves no less. His models led him to the end of the runway and back, and Slava – as Russians affectionately call him – was smiling all along. Even though Zaitsev doesn’t plant to leave fashion altogether, the audience gave him a beautiful finale for his incredible show in silk and gold and lace.
The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia in Moscow this year played host to the Kazakhstan Fashion Week Showcase, showing off designers from the former republic, now young visitors to Paris Fashion Week and more.
Today was the turn of Dinara Satzhan, Naiyl Baikuchukov, the brand Ye.s Couture by Yegana Sadyxova, and Di Siitova.
Naiyl showed off her semi-transparent collection, encrusted with pearls and jewels and sporting long, feathered tails and high collars.
Dii Siitova presented a collection inspired by Native American culture, with gowns and garments looking as if they were created by nature itself.
Yegana Sadyxova created a futuristic gown collection, with models sporting jeweled face masks and balaclavas on the runway.
Dinara Satzhan showed off a collection fully inspired by the national dress of her native Kazakhstan but with a modern twist – with models wearing traditional tubeteika headdresses (albeit made of space-age fabrics). All added an international flair to the day, with the audience completely enthralled by the variety and passion of the young talent.
MERÉ presented their collection next, with Maria Rafikova and Alexandra Talalay bringing an air of pureness and minimalism to Moscow Fashion Week. The brand’s name itself means “pure, perfect, existing” in Latin, and their new offering for the next season was a perfect palette cleanser. The collection was aptly titled “The Frame”, with clean and perfect lines and silhouettes inspired by formalism, modern architecture and the geometrical shape of a rectangle. However, the two young alumni of Moscow’s British School of Design claim that they always try to keep comfort and functionality in mind while creating their garments and it showed – the models looked both futuristic and comfy, soft yet geometrically perfect. The designers also employ a clean and sustainable method in creating their collections, with smart consumption being a constant theme in their work.
Finally, it was the turn of Arut Arustamyan’s ARUT MSCW. The Central Saint Martin’s alum presented a striking show, with all models dressed in shining glitter and embellishments and fast-walking on the runway to 80’s hits. The shiny garments were accompanied by super-hero capes, flowing silk trousers and rock-n-roller girlfriend leather jackets. Shocking-pink high-heel boots brought a punk flavor to this serving of concert-goer chic, with tight silk chokers adding a little kink to the collection. A fun and beautiful set of looks for both a New York fashionista off to Art Basel and a French enfant terrible girl on the lam from her parents, ARUT’s new collection will definitely be a mainstay on Paris and Moscow streets next Fall/Winter season.

When designer Ilan Delouis and art director Jenny Mannerheim founded Each x Other, the duo wanted to combine wardrobe essentials in luxurious fabrics and fine tailoring with artwork and innovative finishes. Each x Other collections are unique, wearable and they democratize art – by collaborating with various renowned artists, the collections bring art out of the gallery and onto the street. The ubiquitous ‘X’ at the heart of Each x Other represents the collaborative aspect of the brand: the collaboration between Delouis and Mannerheim, the androgynous tailoring, and the brand’s core concept – “Art meets Fashion.”
The inspiration for this season’s collection came from a collaboration between two artists; Robert Montgomery has worked his poems into Fabio Paleari’s flower photography. The collaboration between the two typifies the hybridity of the brand: it is a delicate balance between subjectivity and objectivity, detached and intimate, glossy and gritty. They have both worked extensively with Beat generation poets such as Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, and the mixture between art and poetry and the influence of Situationist theorist Guy Debord in their work, align them with Each x Other’s concept of ‘living art.’ The garments form black backdrops for Paleari’s vividly colored flowers, which cut through the darkness in hues of magenta, purple and blue.
It is a simultaneously tough and tender collection: leather jackets are offset with silk dresses, and graphic jerseys with blouses. Military and Sailor uniforms are reinvented: materials are fused with dip-dye finishing and Each x Other code poetry by the brand’s in-house poet Robert Montgomery. Montgomery’s poems “SLAVE TO LOVE” and Each x Other’s core brand slogan “SAFE AND WARM HERE IN THE FIRE OF EACH OTHER” are embroidered onto the fabrics.
All collaborations present the Each x Other brand message of unity, love and strength. The collection includes statement goat hair jackets in strong pastels, floral prints and color fades. Navy blue denim collars, sailor tops, dresses and Each x Other DNA preppy mariner stripes meet military twill-wool jackets with contrasting patches and pockets, pilot bombers and duffel jackets.
This collection is as if all our childhood heroines met and mixed their wardrobes together – princess Leia of Star Wars, meeting the introvert from The Breakfast Club, Sailor Moon and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This collection makes us our own heroines – ready to break down the rules of what women should be. We’re genderless, fearless and limitless. Soft cuts resembling 19th century dresses mix with the cuts donned by 70s rebels, giving the collection a feel of freedom: fashion doesn’t feel dusty, defined or limited by time, but opened up by it. Sporty influences mixed with sweet knitted finishes make this collection anything but dull. Each x Other breaks the unwritten rules of fashion by writing their own rules – the rules of never conforming.

On Wednesday night Hollywood’s most trendy celebrities turned out for the 15th annual Global Green pre-Oscars gala. The green carpet welcomed celebrities decked out in the color of the evening, Green! Guests were honored for their work and initiatives in preserving the environment. Celebrities of all ages turned out for the night in support of the cause and while young celebrities felt a responsibility to make their generation aware, older guests wanted to leave a better home for their children. Some of the names on the red carpet included, Hannah Zeile of NBC’s This is US, Modern Family’s Ed O’Neil, Laura Marano a of Austin and Ally, Lizzy Green and many more.
Lizzy Green who plays Dawn on Nickelodeon’s Nicky Ricky Dicky and Dawn, told Hollywood glam about her look and showed off her Christian Louboutin heels. “This is actually the first time I’ve ever worn Louboutins now I can sing the Cardi B song these are red bottoms…” she said excitedly as she spun around in the shoes. Her dress was also on theme with the night with some floral accents and the pink definitely looked great on the actress! She was also excited for her nomination at the upcoming Kids Choice Awards and shared her anticipation. As for how she likes to stay green Lizzy told Hollywood Glam she stays away from cruelty-free makeup and loves to find fun and fashionable sustainable clothing brands.
Hannah Zeile of NBC’s latest TV hit This is Us, hit the red carpet in an eye-catching red gown which she shared was actually one of her SAG award options. The actress said she was happy to get to wear the piece after all and looked fabulous in the bouncy ruffles. According to Zeile on the night of the SAG awards the cast was so happy she and some of the other actors decided to go to IHOP in “full SAG attire” getting stares from other diners in their black-tie outfits. Speaking of the show’s success Zeile shared her excitement to be part of such a powerful show.
She said, “It’s all so surreal to me, doing a show that’s so emotional and getting to do such important work I feel blessed.”
Ed O’Neil of Modern Family appeared with his wife and spoke about the importance of raising awareness for climate change issues. He said, “We’re here because we have kids” and many of the other celebrity parents echoed the same sentiment throughout the night.
Other celebrity appearances included Charlotte McKinney, Sharon Lawrence, and Juliann Emory.
Finally, Laura Marano and Calum Wothy of Disney’s hit Austin and Ally showed up together after a recent cast reunion that had Instagram going crazy. According to Calum, the two wore matching monochromatic outfits accidentally as Lauren showed up in a head to toe bright red suit while Calum wore all blue. He said, “Well tonight is about the earth so I had two options either green or blue so I went with blue.”
Laura shared that she wanted to change up her look since she had been attending several events where she wore gowns so she went with the pants suit instead which was just as eye-catching in the bright red color.
The two are both on to exciting new projects and Lauren told Hollywood Glam she is excited to be producing her first ever film. She was also looking forward to attending the Oscars and supporting the film Lady Bird which she worked on with a small role. Check out her interview in the video below!
On Saturday, March 3, a crowd gathered at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts in Beverly Hills for the annual Pre-Oscars Hair and Makeup styling panel. This event was an exclusive chance to hear from 7 Oscar-nominated hair and makeup stylists as well as several special guests and veterans of the industry. Academy members, Lois Burwell, Leonar, and Kathryn Blondell welcomed the audience to the special evening saying, “We are here tonight to celebrate some exceptional work.” Then they gave a special acknowledgment to several famous names in the audience including Christian Smith, Robert Bandini, Dan Streetbeck, Rose Wilson, Randy Saer, and Randy Habercamp.
Then the audience heard a brief history of the beginning of the Hair and Makeup Oscars starting with Planet of the Apes in 1968 and the tradition has continued to this day. According to Kathryn Blondell, each year the committee meets in April and October to discuss films released in the previous months that show outstanding work. Then the group meets again in November and December where they vote to narrow down the selection to the top 7 films. This year those films were Bright, Darkest Hour, Wonder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, I Tonya, and Victoria and Abdul. Artists from each film are then invited to what the committee refers to as the “bakeoff” in January where each team gives presentations about their work. Then the final votes are cast.
The panel kicked off with the makeup and hairstyling team from Darkest Hour, Kazuhiro Tsuji, the prosthetic Makeup and Hair manager for Gary Oldman, David Malinowski, and Lucy Civic. The three spoke about their work with Gary Oldman who played Winston Churchill and the unique challenges they faced working on a period film. The team discussed their work with Gary Oldman and how they tackled the challenge of designing his very fragile wig to give the appearance of thin and wispy hair. It was a challenge because, according to the team, the wig only lasted for 10 days at a time. Also, the wig was incredibly thin and see through so it meant that they had to be creative when finding inconspicuous ways to attach it. The team described the short time constraints they worked under saying that they ended up designing a few looks over one weekend! The life of a makeup artist is challenging and fascinating and the work requires more than just knowledge of hairstyles and makeup palettes. Gary Oldman recommended the team saying, “the only way I’ll do it is if Kazu does it” and his confidence paid off with an Oscar nomination. When asked how he first got into makeup and hairstyling by the audience, Kazu said he had been looking for a path to pursue after high school when he came across a magazine article describing the work. He instantly fell in love with the work and hasn’t stopped since. Civic shared her path as well saying she started out as an artist but found out studio art wasn’t her passion during college. She said, “I knew I loved painting and I thought I would like painting faces”.
When asked about his method for creating the looks for Darkest Hour, Kazu explained saying, “I always try to understand who the characters are not just what they look like. So, I could put the essence of Churchill in the makeup.” He also used a 3D body scan and books and DVDs to understand who he was.
Next, we heard from Daniel Phillips and Lew Shepard, the team behind the Victorian masterpiece Victoria and Abdul. The panel also welcomed special guest, Ali Fazal the actor who played Abdul. Daniel and Lew described the trials of working on location laughing about the giant mosquitos they had to deal with in one scene filming in a harbor. Ali chimed in saying, “sitting in the boat we couldn’t finish the scene. I come from India, I’ve seen mosquitos but these, these were something new.” Daniel and Lew talked about working with local makeup artists in all the locations as well saying, “We’re both really hands on we had little workshops and we had lots of prep on the job.” Daniel added, “It wasn’t about making a book alive it was about portraying relationships. We’re all slightly control freaks as makeup artists or at least I am.” His comments got a laugh and resounding agreement from the audience. Daniel said, “We’re lucky if we see an actor once and then you start the day of.” The quick pace of set always keeps makeup and hair workers on their toes but it definitely worked out beautifully for this team. According to Ali, despite a lot of improvising they made movie magic happen and it was an “experience”. Ali said, “It was phenomenal because every look was different.”
The fun part for Ali and the makeup artist, was that since these characters existed in the 1800s they really got to use their imagination and fuse the looks with modern times. For Ali, “It was really the makeup and the costumes that told the story of this entire movie because the entire relationship spanned 14 years.”
For Daniel something he felt was unique about getting to work on this project was the wig work as there was so much involved to create the delicate hairpieces and coiffeurs for each scene. Daniel said, “There is a skill in wig work and it’s kind of a dying art. People underestimate how important good wig work is.”
When the audience asked how the two had initially gotten into hairstyling and makeup work they both had similar stories. Both Lew and Daniel had started out as hairstylists and eventually just fallen into working on films. Of course, not without years of hard work, that definitely served them well as they accepted their Oscar nomination.
Finally, the lead makeup artist from Wonder Arjen Tuiten accompanied by director Steven Shabowski spoke about their work transforming Jacob Chamblay into Auggie the boy with Treacher Collins syndrome. Director Steven told Arjen, “You’re the reason I did this movie. I wanted it to feel real like a real childhood, with a real boy. And I knew that you were the only person that I met who could pull this off.”
Arjen used a prosthetic, basically completely covering the actor Jacob. According to Arjen, it took some time to figure out and working with a young actor was especially complicated since he was growing the whole time they were filming. The prosthetic had 3 settings to give the appearance of an asymmetrical face. The most challenging part on set was the early morning set up. Each day Arjen and Jacob spent 1 hour and 15 minutes getting into full makeup and costume before heading to set. Steven noticed the effect the makeup had on Jacob as well saying, “he would transform into character. He went into the trailer as Jacob and he came out as Auggie.”
When asked how he got into the hair and makeup business, Arjen told the audience he had known what he wanted to do since he was 9 and now he truly is living his dream as an Oscar nominated stylist. After finishing school in Amsterdam, he came out to LA at 19 and hasn’t looked back.
The panel was definitely a success, and everyone enjoyed hearing from all the talented artists who came out. Everyone was anticipating the Awards ceremony the following day and after hearing speeches from everyone it seemed more a mystery than ever who would be the final winner as they all showed such an incredible talent.
The Red Carpet Green Dress celebration tops the list of Pre-Oscar parties each year. This year, the campaign held its 9th annual celebration atop the Hollywood Hills on March 1, where 200 guests gathered to support Suzy Amis Cameron’s internationally recognized organization. The event, which was hosted by Jonas Tahlin, CEO of Absolut Elyx, at his private residence, raises awareness for sustainable fashion and living. Attendees at this exclusive event included Rila Fukushima, Ashlan Cousteau, T.J. Slaughter, last year’s partner Priyanka Bose, among many others.
Guests were dressed to the nines and everyone celebrated the theme of the night with Earth-themed outfits and green accessories. Appetizers were all vegan and plant-based which went along with the theme of the night to protect the environment from animal-based foods that can cause pollution. The avocado toast was a favorite among party-goers who also enjoyed drinks from Absolut Elyx courtesy of the host. Styles from past Red Carpet Green Dress years were displayed throughout the house along with photos of celebrities wearing the pieces on the red carpet. Several of the past celebrities who have worn RCGD styles were also in attendance. The night kicked off with speeches from Suzy Amis Cameron and several members of her staff who had been working year-round to grow the campaign. Rebecca Amis, Suzy’s sister and partner for the MUSE School CA, was also there with two high school students from the school. The students came to represent the muse initiative of project-based learning and showed off a fashion design project they had worked on using articles about the environment to create an awareness-raising fashion statement. The look was a huge hit and caught the eye of many guests at the party including Tahlin who said it was his favorite look of the night. Suzy welcomed everyone and described her vision for the Red Carpet Green Dress and how it has grown over the years into the success it is today.
In her interview, she said next year they are looking forward to their 10-year anniversary and with the help of Samata, her campaign manager who joined in the program’s second year, the project has grown in a huge way. According to Suzy, in the longer term, she hopes to create a sustainable clothing line. Something simple, classic, affordable that people can wear every day. In her speech, Suzy pointed out that the clothing industry is one of the biggest polluters yet so little is known about the problem. She hopes to bring awareness to this issue so that more people are aware of how they can be a part of changing it.
Suzy also spoke about her work at the MUSE School CA, saying how proud she was of the kids. She told Hollywood Glam, “It doesn’t matter how little the children are, they are curious about you and what you’re interested in. Their confidence is amazing, even a six-year-old will just come up and talk to you.”
Rebecca, who is the co-founder of the MUSE School CA, opened up saying how they all worked so closely together as a family and described how much she enjoyed her role as educational director. She shared that after starting the school 12 years ago, she came in as the education director and developed a child-centered curriculum. Her and Suzy both wanted it to be a very student-centric environment, so she developed a passion-based curriculum which gives each student the opportunity to identify their strengths. Something she felt was missing from education today. Rebecca said, “Every student is so different and they learn so differently so they’re able to choose their academics through their passion. The students own who they are. At MUSE School CA its who you are, what do you love, and how do you want to study it.”
Everyone enjoyed the night and guests were excited to hear from different speakers. A representative from Tesla was also in attendance as the company is contributing to the Red Carpet Green Dress initiative. The representative who worked in the design department, praised the work being done because the part of Tesla’s core values is to put design and beauty first. He said that Red Carpet Green Dress is getting so much done because they are creating beautiful pieces to be worn on the red carpet which is the first step since without beauty the pieces would not be worn.
This theme of putting design first carried throughout the night and everyone appreciated the effort the team had put in including CEO Jonas Tahlin who spoke to Hollywood Glam about the party saying, “I love the fact that when I got up to the house I saw the beautiful Tesla’s and the beautiful Mrs. Cameron. The team has covered the pool with this tent and we’re actually standing on top of my swimming pool. I’ve been out of town for 3 weeks so this was a total surprise, I love it!”
The party was a huge hit and according to Tahlin, “Everyone had a good time enjoying themselves while still having a positive impact.”
