Moschino Resort 2018 Menswear SS/2018 Americana

0

June 8, Hollywood, CA

Saddle up and welcome to the Moschino Resort 2018 road trip. This season let Jeremy Scott transport you on a fashion journey from LA to Las Vegas. Just please don’t think the trip we’re on is A to B: highlights on this peripatetic fashion itinerary include some of cut-in-cloth Americana’s greatest semantic landmarks. From the pioneering grit and oil-streaked endeavour that helped make America great, to the sassiness, sparkle and sexiness that helped makes America mate – from shore to shining shore – this is a mixed-up celebration to the nation we all adore.

The archetypal American woman has been perpetually reinvented since the Founding Fathers first objectified them. Scott spans the generations by gleefully mixing his signals. Pretty-pretty chiffon prairie dresses and slip dresses in silk creponne are appliquéd with prototypical pin-up girls – think Betties Grable and Page with an upward gust of Marilyn. A season-specific collaboration with Playboy sees another famous Betty – Boop – given the bunny girl treatment along with fellow string bean Olive Oyle. Patchworked denim peplum jackets and fluted pencil skirts are peppered with panels of floral and lace. There’s a cowhide bra-top for cowgirls and colorburst sequin sparkle tops for showgirls.

The show is set in a boneyard of analogue Las Vegas signage: relics of the Strip in its mid-century pomp, with just a glimmer of faded sparkle still glinting. Through them accelerates another key decorative archetype of Americana: hot rods, moto and biker culture. The Playboy logo is toughened into a studded biker emblem. Hotrod spraycan flames lick the bonnet of double breasted suits, bustiers and appliqued slouchy denim. An above the bosom-cropped Moschino moto jacket and above the knee moto boots provide the hard carapace for the softness of a romantically sheer chiffon dress. Petrol and prettiness combine in a deep-V neckline chiffon dress printed with death’s head patches, bumper stickers, stop signs and other emblems of the open road. The Western shirt shifts gear into a biker jacket while footwear includes platform cowboy boots – the hump meets The High Chaparral.

Speaking before this show, Jeremy said: “It’s been fun and enthralling to play with so many different elements of American in what for me is a totally new way. I’ve tried to gussy up the earthy side a little, and in bring the glamorous side a little bit down to earth. That’s reflective of me I suppose: I grew up on a farm but I can walk the red carpet in Cannes.”

Another great icon of American culture making his return to Jeremy Scott’s runway today is a yellow absorbent legend: SpongeBob SquarePants. The pieces featuring SpongeBob have been produced as a capsule collaboration to support AIDS organization, (RED): a portion of proceeds from their sale will go to the Global Fund.

We hope you enjoy the ride through Moschino’s mixed-up, high-impact exploration of Americana. Please wear your seat belt.

The Leftovers: A Special FYC Series Finale

Paramount Pictures, June 4, 2017

It was great to receive an invite and attend the special screening of The Leftovers, Season Finale, on June 4th.

On that day media, members of film industry and VIP guests had a chance to watch the special screening of the Season Finale and participate in the following Q&A with Amy Brenneman, Christopher Eccleston, Regina King, Justin Theroux, Kevin Carroll, Ann Dowd and Damon Lindelof.

The event took place at Paramount Pictures.

The Season Finale starts with Nora agreeing to be a part of the scientific experiment that sends her “back to the future” where she sees Kevin.  She is skeptical, somewhat cynical, she reviews her past but still wants to believe. The episode starts with the scientists accusing her of lying. This topic becomes one of the most important in the Season Finale: everyone lies or being suspected in lying.

What happens next? It’s a great story we have to watch.

First Fashion Business Portal and Virtual Showroom for Emerging Designers to Revolutionize Industry

Miami, June 1, 2017

Beth Sobol, with more than 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, and Founder of Miami Fashion Week has recently launched The Council of International Fashion Designers (CIFD). The first of its kind for the fashion industry, the CIFD platform provides a direct link to experts, information, and resources to help emerging brands succeed in the United States.

The CIFD is a one-stop shop for designers seeking advice and guidance in positioning their businesses for growth in a complex domestic and international fashion market. Among the many benefits, CIFD members will have access to the industries top experts to help them navigate through the critical stages and challenges facing designers and to help them sustain in today’s digital and disruptive market.

Sponsored by the Trade Commission of Peru in Miami, designers joining the CIFD are Ana Maria Guiulfo, Claudia Bertolero, Sitka Semsch, Alessandra Petersen, Andrea Llosa, and swimwear brand Aguaclara. Ambassador designers include Julian Chang and Viviana G. for Petit Pois in Miami, Heather Jones in Trinidad & Tobago, and Sally Esinman Torpey of Sallet Fashion House in Ghana.

The CIFD, together with Bamboo Rose, provider of the product innovation platform that connects retail communities, have collaborated to create the Bamboo Rose “House of Fashion”, a virtual showroom providing CIFD members with access to global buyers and resources never before possible for an emerging brand.

“Designers and brands today are under more pressure to innovate and reach wider markets than ever before. The traditional approach to developing products and reaching buyers doesn’t cut it,” said Sue Welch, CEO of Bamboo Rose. “Designers, retailers and brands need new ways to reach international buyers and quickly receive feedback on their product for their particular markets. The Bamboo Rose House of Fashion provides a unique online community that connects CIFD designers with international retail buyers to ultimately give consumers a more appealing, high quality product.”

CIFD members will have access to a dream team of experts and resources in many phases of retail strategies, fashion law, factoring and finance, branding, social media strategies, e-Commerce, technology in fashion, trends forecasting, international trade assistance, and much more. “Beth has spent the last two years working diligently to assemble her team of advisers for this much-needed service said Aaron Perry,” Beth’s former business partner with Miami Fashion Week and a shareholder in the CIFD.

“Today’s designers need to be smarter about and more aware of the changing consumer shopping habits than ever before. These monumental changes have precipitated a need for different methods of financing businesses. E-commerce plays a greater and greater role in brand building and it thereby requires a different approach to capital needs and allocations. Wholesale channels of distribution are also morphing daily. The more informed small business owners are, the better prepared they will be to find a path to growth and profitability in this new environment. I look forward to providing insights and financing opportunities through the CIFD to its membership,” said Gary A. Wassner, CEO, Principal, Hilldun Corporation, and shareholder in the CIFD.

For The Third Consecutive Year, Women in Motion Has Honored Women At The Cannes Film Festival

Isabelle Huppert received the Women in Motion Award and honored the director, Maysaloun Hamoud with the Young Talents Award at the official dinner hosted by 200 guests at Place de la Castre, which included Uma Thurman, Jessica Chastain and Catherine Deneuve.

Women in Motion welcomed more than 300 guests to discussions on the role of women in cinema with Robin Wright, Isabelle Huppert, Yang Yang, Salma Hayek Pinault, Costa-Gavras, Kaouther Ben Hania and Diane Kruger, who was presented with the Best Actress Prize at the 70th Festival de Cannes for her interpretation in In the fade by Fatih Akin.

Once again this year, Women in Motion opened the doors of the Kering suite on the 7th floor of the Majestic Barrière Hotel to more than 300 guests from the world of film and media to discuss the contribution and representation of women in the film industry during its Talks program, an event that have become a must at the Cannes Film Festival.

This season opened with a first Talk in the presence of the actress Robin Wright, known in particular as Claire Underwood in House of Cards, for which she finds herself for the first time behind the camera. While the disparities between women and men remain in cinema, Robin Wright has, among other things, come to defend the representation of women filmmakers by requesting industry professionals to continue giving them the floor, especially to the younger ones: “On must encourage the younger generation to express themselves. Feminism means equality: equal pay for equal work. Now things have to move on the side of the decision-makers and film financiers who are mostly men. It is time for things to change and for the new generation to take on this subject.

In parallel to the presentation of the two films in which she is currently appearing and which competed in the Official Selection, the international icon Isabelle Huppert expressed her position on the place of women in cinema. She is an inspiration to women the world over and has observed the major role women play before and behind the camera, for example in the United States where some of them “run studios and are courageous and very enterprising women.” So there is no path cut out for them, but “by being forced to take the byways can bring women greater freedom.

Two days later, the actor Yang Yang also spoke for a Talk centered on the representation of women on screen, as well as on women’s cinema, which he perceives as having a finer sensitivity to emotions. During this Talk, the Chinese actor said he was privileged to be able to participate in events like Women in Motion, and “to give his energy to encourage more people to respect women’s rights and interests” so as to “bring this positive energy to our people.

During the second week of the fortnight, Women in Motion brought together the actress, producer and board member of the Kering Foundation, Salma Hayek Pinault, the filmmaker and president of the Cinémathèque Française, Costa-Gavras, and the young director selected by Un Certain Regard, Kaouther Ben Hania. Women are not the only ones to be aware of the disparities in treatment, as evidenced by the presence of Costa-Gavras who came to share his experience of cinema where women can be regarded as “second-class people”, and “are treated differently, both at the level of salary and by not being able to fully exercise their profession as filmmaker.”  This Talk, organized by the Kering Foundation and more broadly centered on violence against women, found a particular echo in the film by Kaouther Ben Hania, who “wanted to make this film inspired by a true story, from the point of view of the justice and the courage of women. It’s David and Goliath, because it’s so difficult to prosecute assailants when they’re supposed to represent the law. It’s like going through a second rape!” Courage acknowledged by Salma Hayek Pinault, for whom it is necessary to continue to “fight so that this violence, which takes on multiple faces around the world, is never again associated with the word ‘normal’“, and in particular through the cinema that serves to “create an audience, and give opportunity to change attitudes.

The third Women in Motion Talks ended on a note of optimism with actress Diane Kruger, who was presented with the Best Actress Prize for her powerful interpretation of a woman grieving and seeking revenge after having lost her beloved son and husband in In the fade, Fatih Akin’s latest film: “Even if it’s still incredibly difficult to occupy a place, they manage more and more to create their own space, and each one must do it, and demand, for example, that the actresses be paid the same as the actors!”  A space that allows the best way to put “female characters at the center, not at the service of male roles.

On Sunday May 21st 2017, the official Women in Motion dinner that’s now become a tradition was held at Place de la Castre. On this occasion, François-Henri Pinault, Pierre Lescure, the President of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux, the General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, presented the Women in Motion Award to the outstanding Isabelle Huppert for her creative boldness, career, and her ability to inspire new generations of talent. For the Young Talents Award, Isabelle Huppert chose to honor the director, Maysaloun Hamoud for In Between (Bar Bahar), her first feature film that follows the daily life of three young Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv, who are divided between their desire for independence and their family traditions.

Among the 200 guests were the actresses Uma Thurman, Jessica Chastain, Salma Hayek Pinault, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Claudia Cardinale, Liv Ullmann, Juliette Binoche, Marina Foïs, Sandrine Kiberlain, Laetitia Casta, Valeria Golino, Elodie Bouchez , Béatrice Dalle, Dominique Blanc, Agnès Jaoui, Chris Lee, Clotilde Courau, the Creative Director of the maison Yves Saint Laurent Anthony Vaccarello and Charlotte Casiraghi. Also present were the actors Mads Mikkelsen, Reda Kateb, Yvan Attal, Christopher Thompson, Diego Luna and Yang Yang.

Kering and the Cannes Film Festival also welcomed the directors Agnès Varda, Claire Denis, Paolo Sorrentino, Tonie Marshall, Costa-Gavras, Nicole Garcia, Eric Lartigau, Valerie Donzelli, Jerry Schatzberg, Maren Ade and Shlomi Elkabetz along with the musicians Michel Legrand, Thomas Bangalter and Michael Barker. The fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier and the models Anja Rubik and Kouka Webb were also among the guests.

Women in Motion will continue to highlight the women of the 7th art throughout the year. A new Talk will be organized in Hikarie (Japan) on June 17th as part of the Women in Society event organized by Elle Japan, which will include the director Naomi Kawase, who was in the Official Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The presence of Women in Motion on the international scene will also be intensified thanks to the two-year partnership signed with UniFrance announced on May 9th, which will allow Women in Motion to be part of a program of international events to be revealed shortly.

Launched in 2015 by Kering, in partnership with the Festival de Cannes, Women in Motion is an integral part of the Festival’s official programme. The initiative is based on two pillars: Talks open to journalists and industry professionals which give major figures the opportunity to compare and contrast their experiences and viewpoints around the question of women’s contribution to cinema, and to pool their recommendations for greater representation within the industry.
