Starlight Children’s Foundation Presents Annual Dream Halloween Costume Party In Downtown Los Angeles

On Saturday October 22, the Starlight Children’s Foundation presented their annual Dream Halloween event in downtown Los Angeles. Over 600 children from local hospitals as well as many celebrities attended the event and came out to raise awareness for the charity.  Many of the celebrities on the red carpet were children themselves and came out to make the event even better for the kids who attended. This event is definitely a treat for children who had a great party and enjoyed themselves for the evening.  And with all the bright faces and amazing costumes, it also is a great place to note fashion trends this Halloween.

Since the event was a costume party, many chose to show off their favorite Halloween costumes on the red carpet.  One of the first to arrive was Madisyn Shipman of Nickelodeon’s Game Shakers series.  She was throwing it back with an original ET inspired costume.  When I asked her about it she explained that her father and she had made it the night before because she felt like costumes were always better handmade.  A few of the other celebrities were also sporting handmade costumes.  One was Tiffany Espensen of Spiderman who wore this fun and colorful dress.  She described her costume as “a whimsical circus performer” and told me that her mother had sewed the costume for her.  Handmade is definitely the trend this Halloween.  Another original idea was from Luna Blaise of Fresh Off The Boat.  When I asked about her trendy costume she excitedly answered, “I’m not sure what I am supposed to be!” Then she explained she found her red choker at Topshop and decided that she must have gotten killed because she was bleeding from the neck.  Another fashionable star who showed off her handpicked costume was Aubrey Miller of Just Add Magic.  The fifteen-year-old described her costume as a hipster skeleton and said, “I thought it would be a fun take on a traditional skeleton outfit.”  One of the most popular costumes for boys was the Willie Wonka and we saw many different takes on it from the young stars.

The entertainment for the night also arrived on the red carpet in style.  The trending new band, The Leftover Cuties, showed up in their signature retro style with feather boas and fun accessories.  I also interviewed Chris Helfrich the CEO of the Starlight foundation about what he was looking forward to most for the evening and he replied, “600 kids and their families coming from hospitals around the area and giving them an escape.  It’s going to be amazing.”

The party got started around 6pm when CEO Chris Helfrich gave some opening remarks and thanked the sponsors of the event including Michael’s, Nintendo, and Northwestern Mutual.  He welcomed the Vice President of Michael’s who talked about how excited they were to be a part of the event.  Then in a special announcement, Helfrich revealed Starlight’s latest project, providing colorful and fun hospital gowns to children who are in the hospital.  He said that they hoped to see the gowns in hospitals across the country. Afterwards he introduced the first act of the night, up and coming band, Leftover Cuties.  The talented band played many fun songs while guests enjoyed the pastries and appetizers being served.

Next, the popular teen band Aussie Youth gave a performance along with Le Petit Cirque, the amazingly talented children’s circus that had been doing acts all night.  The attending children loved the brightly colored costumes and were excited to see the young band perform.

Upstairs everyone enjoyed the spooky Halloween crafts that Michael’s provided.  Children created everything from bracelets to frames for the photos from the photo booth.  There was also cookie decorating where kids designed their own cookies to take home.

Guests were also the first to experience the brand new Nintendo game, Mario Party Star Rush, in the gaming center.

The successful event brought many smiles to young faces.  Everyone had a good time showing support for such a worthy cause and getting into the Halloween spirit.

Comedy-drama Jean of the Joneses Premieres on TV One

0

The critically acclaimed comedy-drama, Jean of the Joneses, premieres Sunday, October 23 at 7 p.m. ET (encore at 9 p.m. ET) on TV One. The network’s latest original movie centers on 25-year-old Jean, portrayed in a break-out performance by Taylour Paige (Hit The Floor), and her multi-generational, middle-class family of strong-minded yet loving women. In the wake of tragedy, this matriarchal clan uncovers secrets that will ultimately teach their family a powerful lesson of acceptance.

Paige is joined by co-stars Michelle Hurst ( Orange is The New Black) as Daphne, the matriarch whose secrets lead the ladies down a path of dysfunction. Jean’s aunts further complicate the family dynamics as Anne, the “baby” of the Joneses sisters, played by Erica Ash ( Survivor’s Remorse) is unable to take responsibility for her decisions. Janet, played by Gloria Reuben ( Lincoln, ER), finds herself in the midst of a bitter separation and projects negativity onto anyone in her path.

Sherri Shepherd ( Trial & Error, The View, The Soul Man) also appears in the dramatic role of Jean’s rigid mother “Maureen,” who, by holding on to the pain of her past, is unable to forge the relationship her daughter yearns to have. “It was pure joy working with Stella,” remarked Shepherd. “Her brilliance shines through every word on the page.”

Jean of the Joneses explores the multifaceted family issues that are both relatable  andoffer teachable lessons. Tensions rise, and old conflicts come to a boil, when Jean uncovers various buried family secrets while throughout the film, the Jones women  face their divorces, infidelities, and past transgressions. In particular, Jean faces the tough truths of her career and crippling ability to move on from a past relationship to the love staring her right in the face. Inspired by her own life experiences, the semi- autobiographical screenplay was the first script penned by writer-director Stella Meghie.

Jean of the Joneses is an original film like none other seen on our network,” said Brad Siegel, TV One’s President. “As we continue to raise the bar with our original movies,we are motivated to continue presenting opportunities for increased visibility tonew talent – like Stella Meghie – whose powerful film demonstrates our commitment to support and nurture brilliant storytellers at all stages in their career.”

“I was so fortunate to work with TV One on my first feature film. I couldn’t have had a more creatively supportive team than Karen Peterkin, D’Angela Proctor and Brad Siegel,” remarked Meghie. “I’m so proud of Jean of the Joneses and excited to present it TV One’s audience.”

The film’s television debut follows a critically-acclaimed festival run, including a world premiere at SXSW where it earned a “Buzz” screening and rave reviews. Variety noted, “Meghie’s endearingly acerbic debut feature…deserves to be discovered at more stops along the festival circuit,” and the film went on to screen at Atlanta Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival (LAFF), and the Nantucket Film Festival.

Jean of the Joneses is directed and written by Stella Meghie, and was filmed on location in New York and Toronto, Canada. Amos Adetuyi, Stella Meghie and Floyd Kane serve as Producers, and the film is executive produced by Elizabeth Cullen and Sean Dwyer. For TV One, Karen Peterkin is Executive in Charge-of-Production and Director of Scripted Original Programming; Donyell McCullough is Senior Director of Talent & Casting; Robyn Greene-Arrington is VP of Original Programming; and D’Angela Proctor is Head of Original Programming.

JEFFREY TAMBOR, AMY LANDECKER, DAX SHEPARD, SHAY MITCHELL, TERI POLO AND SHERRI SAUM TO PRESENT OUTFEST LEGACY AWARDS ON OCTOBER 23, 2016

0

SAMUEL LARSEN TO PERFORM
Los Angeles, CA (October 19, 2016) – Outfest, the non-profit organization promoting equality by creating, sharing, and protecting LGBT stories on the screen, announced today that Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”), Amy Landecker (“Transparent”), Dax Shepard (“Parenthood”), Shay Mitchell (“Pretty Little Liars”), Teri Polo (“The Fosters”) and Sherri Saum (“The Fosters”) will be presenting Legacy Awards to Jill Soloway, Sean Hayes and Freeform, respectively. Singer Samuel Larsen (“Glee”) is set to perform.

The 2016 Legacy Awards will take place on Sunday, October 23 at performing arts venue Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles, with head chef Neal Fraser (Redbird). Merrill Lynch will return as the Presenting Sponsor.

As previously announced, Soloway will be honored with the Visionary Award, which recognizes artistic and creative contributions to the LGBT media visibility for a body of work that includes “Transparent.” Hayes is receiving the Trailblazer Award in recognition of his exemplary career as a stage, film, television, and recording artist and for his longtime, passionate support of the LGBT community. Freeform is receiving the Corporate Trailblazer Award in recognition of its groundbreaking programming for young adults — people in high school, college and the decade that follows — which includes such LGBT-friendly programs including “Pretty Little Liars,” “The Fosters,” and “Shadowhunters.”

The Legacy Awards serves as a fundraiser to support the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project. Outfest and UCLA Film & Television Archive partnered in 2005 to create the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, the only program in the world exclusively dedicated to saving and preserving LGBT moving images. The Legacy Project is aimed at the crisis in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender moving-image archiving. Many of the landmark LGBT films produced over the last 40-plus years are already in danger of fading away; their original exhibition prints are in tatters, and their negatives are in woeful storage conditions or even lost. For the last 11 years, the Legacy Project is proud to have collected more than 36,000 moving-image items and to have restored 24 historically important film and video projects.

Previous Legacy Award honorees include Tom Hanks (Philadelphia), Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right), Armistead Maupin (“Tales of the City”), Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry), Lee Daniels (“Empire”), Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago) Adam Shankman (Hairspray), Roland Emmerich (Stonewall), Alan Poul (“The Newsroom”), Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook), and Paris Barclay (“Glee”).

The Legacy Awards are also sponsored by Brown-Forman, Delta Air Lines, Total Wine & More, and Variety. Tickets are on sale now at www.outfest.org. Tables and tribute ads are still available. St. John’s Well Child & Family Center is an independent 501(c)(3) community health center that serves patients of all ages through a network of Federally Qualified Health Centers and school-based clinics that span the breadth of Central and South Los Angeles and Compton. Their work goes far beyond the traditional healthcare model and in addition to providing a broad array of primary care services, they place a high priority on developing supportive services to address families’ educational, socio-economic, and mental health needs. St. John’s provides these services to many of the most under-represented populations in Los Angeles, including homeless, undocumented, and unaccompanied minor residents.

Several years ago, St. John’s Well Child & Family Center began developing the first transgender health care program, which is now one of the largest in the country and is the only to be designed and run by transgender people. While it is the largest and most effective in the country, it is estimated that there are still more than 30,000 transgender individuals in Los Angeles that don’t have access to these services, many of whom seek alternative methods like obtaining hormones at the swap meet, not under the care of a physician. TransNation was designed as a fundraiser to bring these vital services to a larger population in Los Angeles and beyond.

More information and tickets for the beauty pageant and film festival are available at www.transnationfestival.org.

Wiz Khalifa launches new clothing line Bash by Junkfood in Venice Beach

Fans of all ages lined up outside Junk Food clothing store on Abbot Kinney boulevard this past Saturday for the chance to see Wiz Khalifa who debuted his new clothing line Bash. The singer who is best known for his hit single Black and Yellow and more recently the song See You Again launched his first clothing line at the classic Venice boutique. Bash by Junkfood is a line inspired by his son Sebastian who even helped with some of the designing according to Khalifa. He pointed out the cartoon style pumpkin graphic on some of the t-shirts saying that Sebastian had been the one to draw the idea.

The store was decorated with photos of Khalifa and Sebastian posing in the clothing line and playing together. Khalifa took photos of the display as soon as he walked in excited to see his collection in the store. He said that Sebastian had a birthday party to attend and couldn’t make it to the release but seemed happy to be at the launch for his son. The clothing line consists of jackets and t-shirts for men and children and some of them are even matching. Khalifa explained that he and his son have the same sense of style saying that Sebastian was a “cool and classy kid”. This inspired some of the matching pieces for children and adults in the collection. One of my favorite pieces was the bomber jacket which came in sizes for children and adults for matching looks! The cartoon style graphics were a hallmark of the collection and represented Khalifa’s hope that his collection would send a message to have fun. Fans enjoyed the cute and stylish kids clothing most but, some also said they would wear the men’s clothing. When asked, Khalifa said Sebastian’s favorite piece was anything with pumpkins on it The October release was no accident since according to Khalifa Sebastian’s favorite holiday is Halloween. The collection even features several Halloween related graphics including ghosts and, of course, the pumpkins Sebastian created. Fans commented on the graphics pointing out the smiley face with a gold tooth that was displayed in the window of the store while they were waiting. Some thought it looked like a high face since Khalifa is known for his support of medical marijuana use.

The collection also featured Pittsburgh related designs and colors in a tribute to Khalifa’s hometown. The collection is also available in the Junkfood stores online shop so fans from all over can shop the collection. Overall the launch seemed like a success despite a sudden scheduling conflict that caused Khalifa to leave early. Many people purchased pieces from the collection excited to see the singers first foray into the fashion industry.

October 16th, 2016, Hollywood Palladium

By Lana Krapivina

Seth Rogen’s Halloween wouldn’t be a fun if we didn’t spot actress Katie Stevens wearing Mary Poppins costume on the red carpet or Snoop Dogg performing on the stage of Hollywood Palladium later that night. Beautiful actress Elizabeth Olsen (Captain America’s Civil War), John Galecki (CBS Big Bang Theory), journalist and activist Maria Shriver, Michael Galante, Miss USA 2015 Olivia Jordan, Adam Shapiro (Steve Jobs), Katie Lowes (Scandal), Courtney Love and her daughter Frances Bean Cobain showed their support to Charity’s Annual Variety Show that raises awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.

Every year the Variety show has a specific theme, and this time it was all about Halloween, so some of the guests we noticed wearing funny Halloween costumes.

The evening was supported by Netflix, Rivet Revolution, BMW of Beverly Hills, LACroix, Fast Rabbit, and other sponsors.

About Hilarity For Charity:

In 2012, Seth Rogens and Lauren Miller Rogen (along with some amazing friends), created Hilarity For Charity (HFC), a movement to inspire change and raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease. They later established the Hilarity for Charity Fund as a part of the Alzheimer’s Association, through which funds raised are directed to help families struggling with Alzheimer’s care, increase support groups nationwide, and fund cutting edge research. Since its inception, Hilarity for Charity has raised over $5 million to support these efforts. Through evenings filled with music and comedy, the flagship Los Angeles Variety Show creates the next generation of Alzheimer’s advocates.
